In second original series pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before, the Starfleet laser pistol displays several design modifications as compared to its appearance in the first series pilot The Cage, most notably the addition of geared wheels on each side above the grip. This version is carried by Spock as the Enterprise crew attempt to control the rapidly expanding extrasensory powers of crewman Gary Mitchell, transformed by contact with a barrier at the edge of the galaxy. The laser pistol is briefly seen again in first season episodes The Man Trap and What Are Little Girls Made Of?, before being fully superceded by the phaser.
