This is a \"hero\" Type II\"Boomerang\" style phaser prop made by HMS Studios for the character Luther Sloan (William Sadler) for Star Trek Deep Space Nine (DS9). It was the only phaser prop of this style ever painted all black (the body is polished pearl, the grip is satin, the emitter is semigloss, the trigger is red, and the intensity and width buttons are tan) The idea of this phase was intended to be a covert and much more powerful weapon than the regular Starfleet issue phaser. Sadly, this prop did not get the screen time it deserved as the closeup shot of it was eventually cut out of the episode. The information I have gathered on this was provided to me by Ron Nomura the prop painter for HMS and Michael Moore the owner of HMS studios.
