In first season episode Miri, Kirk and crew discover another Earth, one where a bioengineered virus has exterminated the entire adult population 300 years earlier, leaving behind children who are virtually immortal... until they eventually enter puberty, when they too contract the disease. With the help of this device beamed down from the Enterprise, McCoy and Spock race to find a cure after discovering that the landing party has also been infected. The device is seen again, with minor changes, in subsequent episodes The Menagerie, Operation: Annihilate, Journey to Babel, and The Omega Glory.

Four constant-on status lights, two viewport lights, and nine blinking activity lights, matching those present onscreen. Inserting a faux blood slide in the front specimen slot activates the main viewport illumination and analysis sound fx.
