An original cane used by Master Yoda in George Lucas' 1999 blockbuster Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, the film that launched the prequel trilogy, starring Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, and Natalie Portman. Set 32 years before the original film, The Phantom Menace follows Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (McGregor) as they protect Queen Amidala (Portman) in hopes of securing a peaceful end to a large-scale interplanetary trade dispute. Joined by Anakin Skywalker, a young slave with unusually strong natural powers of the Force, they simultaneously contend with the mysterious return of the Sith. Presiding over it all from the Jedi Council is Master Yoda, brought to life in the film as a practical puppet performed in the tradition of the original trilogy, and this cane was used in the scenes that required the puppet and his signature walking stick. In Star Wars lore, the cane is known as Yoda's gimer stick, a gift presented to him by the Wookiees and crafted from the gimer bush, which the ancient Jedi Master would chew on to absorb its beneficial nutrients. The design follows the same iconic cane first seen with the Yoda puppets in The Empire Strikes Back, before the character transitioned to full CGI in Episodes II and III. As one of the last physical pieces from the era of Yoda as a hands-on, practical creation, this cane is a truly iconic prop from an even more iconic character, and a genuine artifact of Star Wars history.
