This Horga'hn is an original production-made prop from Star Trek: The Next Generation and has exceptional production provenance.
I acquired this piece through Heritage Auctions in 2025. Heritage's catalog states that the prop was obtained from the collection of Gary Hutzel, the Emmy Award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor whose work helped define the look of the Star Trek television franchise.
While researching the prop after purchase, I discovered what appears to be an earlier sale of this exact Horga'hn in a September 10, 2016 LiveAuctioneers auction, where it was described as originating from the collection of Ron Moore, one of Star Trek: The Next Generation's most influential writers and producers.
After comparing the auction photographs from both sales, it is clear it depicts the same Horga'hn. The distinctive surface characteristics visible in each auction match one another, suggesting a continuous ownership history from the earlier auction to the Heritage sale.
What makes this example especially significant is that I was able to independently screen-match it to its appearance in the Season 3 episode "Captain's Holiday."
Through a meticulous frame-by-frame examination of the episode, I compared this Horga'hn to other known production-made examples as well as the Horga'hn prominently handled by Vash. Four distinct physical characteristics—details that are not inherent to the production mold and therefore unique to this individual prop—match the close-up seen on screen. After carefully reviewing the episode, I could not locate another close-up that provides enough detail to produce this level of correspondence, potentially making this the only screen-matched Horga'hn from Captain's Holiday in existence.
Taken together, the documented production provenance, the apparent continuity between the 2016 and 2025 auction records, and the independent screen-match provide a compelling case that this is the very hero Horga'hn used on screen during Captain's Holiday.
