Smart AI Cortana chose the Master Chief as her 'carrier', and accompanied him during much of the Battle of Installation 04, through use of a UNSC data crystal chip. Designed to carry 'hard' data, such as the Reimann Matrix required to give Cortana mobility, the data chip interfaces directly with the helmet of the Chief's Mjolnir armor.
