The Starfleet Mark IX Science Tricorder was originally introduced during the second season of Star Trek: Voyager and the fourth season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.  Built by custom prop house, HMS Studios, in Hollywood, CA, the new design was smaller and more compact that the Mark VII prop which it replaced.  Fabricated from custom vac-formed shells and outfitted with a large array of LED's, the Mark IX Tricorder prop looked eye-catching and very functional.

Starting with an examination of the original prop, our engineers worked with original components supplied by HMS to reproduce this iconic prop in die cast.  Adding weight and a more substantial feel to the prop was important given this was supposed to be a scientific instrument traveling to strange new worlds.  HMS provided original paint samples, graphics files and their invaluable critique of the project as it progressed from prototype through to production.  eFX would like to thank Mike Moore and Steve Horch.
