Here is a cool screen used prop. It is made from a birch limb that is over 21" long. It is decoratively wrapped with a strip of raw hide that would allow for better grip. At the end is tied a length of dyed manila rope, and at the end of that is tied a mean looking stone. it looks like a piece of cracked granite but it is actually soft foam rubber that is painted.
