In six-part story Darkness Calls, Hellboy battles Koshchei the Deathless, a legendary Russian warrior who cannot be killed, now under the control of the Baba Yaga, who has sworn vengeance on Big Red for past grievances. Hellboy gets assistance from an unlikely source - A doll-like girl named Vasilisa (another Russian folk character) who although eventually killed by Koshchei, gives Hellboy her special comb and handkerchief as she dies. Both items will be needed to defeat Koshchei the Immortal, when the comb transforms into a stand of tall trees impaling him to the sky, and the handkerchief into a torrent of water washing his last incarnation away.
