Star Trek, USS Kelvin Type 2 Phaser

Resin, brass, and aluminum replica of the phaser envisioned and created for use aboard the USS Kelvin. Although not actually seen in the theatrical cut of the movie, the original prop has been on public display at an ArcLight Cinema in LA, along with other ST XI screen-used and production-made props.

This phaser has an industrial, hardware, almost steampunk look, and one that echoes the classic TOS phaser better than the chromified flip-barrel phaser seen later in ST XI. The most curious component of this phaser is the piece hanging off the back. Exhaust vent? Recharge port? Handy socket wrench? Something... else?
