Star Trek: The Next Generation, Type 2 Cobrahead Phaser *Prototype*

The 'cobrahead' phaser design replaced the bulkier 'dustbuster' phaser after the second season of TNG, and was the standard Starfleet phaser throughout the rest of the series.

Two hero versions with multi-LED power bars had been created and were used in closeup shots during third season episodes Vengeance Factor and The Hunted, among others. This prototype, of simpler design but with the addition of a light in the emitter, was created and delivered to production for use in the fourth season and thereafter, but no additional phasers were ordered in this style, making this item unique (provenance has been confirmed by former Prop'er Effects and HMS Studios propmakers).

Hollow painted resin, with simple on/off illumination of the entire power meter controlled by the left power level button, and illumination of the emitter bulb activated by depressing the trigger button. The right power level button is nonfunctional.
