Sanctuary, Time Compression Field Disruptor
original movie prop
In one of the best Sanctuary episodes, a clever third season offering titled Carentan, a small French town and the area around it suddenly become inaccessible to the outside world. Or more precisely, anyone who passes through an invisible barrier disappears and does not return. Over the course of 3 weeks, first a group of scientists, then a special forces search and rescue team, and subsequently agent Ravi Ganapathiramani of the Mumbai Sanctuary, have disappeared. Evading a military quarantine, Helen Magnus and Will Zimmerman enter the area, looking for answers.
Inside the barrier, Magnus and Will find their colleague Ravi, alive but aged 40 years, and a small struggling community including descendants of those who had entered the field 3 weeks earlier. Somehow, time has accelerated to greater than 2100 x normal within the field, such that 1 day outside now equals 6 years within. Escape is impossible; trying to travel out through the barrier results in instant messy death due to intense dimensional recoil, and previous efforts by those trapped within to understand and possibly disable the field have failed. Because no one ever enters the town anymore (due to the 1 week old military quarantine outside), the people inside have been on their own for decades, barely managing a subsistence living. At the moment, the biggest immediate problem for the people of Carentan is that, following the 3 year long day, the 3 year long night and the food and power shortages that come with it will be upon them soon.
With limited resources and time, Helen and Will construct this device from bits and pieces of century old computers and other technology brought in by the first scientists. By activating it at the epicenter of the disturbance, they hope to collapse the field from within, but its anyone's guess whether the thing will actually work.
Key plot device, present in multiple scenes, readily screenmatched to closeups in numerous details, particularly evident on the circuit board side. Consists of an array of random PC components and cables, with additional parts including a ceramic insulator, brass connectors, and a small brass gauge. A blue microLED lightstrip illuminates under the top, activated by toggling the red switch. Includes a dented and scuffed cylindrical metal shield which fits around the device, also used in the episode.
