I had an old full-scale static replica of the TOS Tricorder and decided to upgrade it. I wanted to make it unique, so I decided to pattern it after the banged-up tricorder that Mr Spock used in the TOS episode City On The Edge Of Forever. This was the only TOS episode where the tricorder's screen wasn't just blank gray - in one scene Spock displays a newspaper clipping describing the death of the humanitarian Edith Keeler. I replicated that screen image in Photoshop and, just as a finishing touch, created a display base that simulates the primitive vacuum-tube circuit that Spock built to drive the tricorder. The finished tricorder has working lights and sound effects in addition to the detailed screen image.
