The Starfleet Communicator is one of the most iconic and recognizable props in Sci-Fi history. It has had a wide variety of design changes over the centuries. These have ranged from the compact unit used in the 22nd Century, to the more bulky subspace units used a century later, and finally in the form of Combadges during the 24th Century.

The Communicator of the Enterprise NX-01 owes it's design elements to the mobile phones of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This spring-loaded unit contains basic controls and readouts to adjust the frequency and gain, ensuring reliable communications between parties.
