2010, SAL 9000 Interface
replica movie prop
Supercomputer SAL helps Dr. Chandra unlock the mystery of HAL, her counterpart who had calmly and inexplicably murdered the crew of the Discovery One Jupiter mission nine years earlier.
As most of the original props and sets from 2001 A Space Odyssey had been destroyed (reportedly at Stanley Kubrick's insistence), HAL had to be recreated and SAL created anew for 2010. Both interfaces differed considerably from the earlier HAL, with changes including shorter and wider dimensions, larger and flatter lenses, all-silver lens bezels, unperforated speaker grills, and backlit logos.
Anodized brushed aluminum backplate, with accurate backlit vinyl SAL 9000 logo. Glass lens, machined metal lens components, and silver metal lens bezel. Art paper on perforated backing plate speaker grille area, recreating the featureless grey panel present onscreen, while still allowing for sound transmission. High quality audio, including nine different professionally digitized SAL voice clips, randomly activated by sound or infrared remote.
By SD Studios, with additional credit to Karl Tate, Mike Goobic, and exoray.
