Although Wraith generally cull their victims, certain ones are tagged and released, to be repeatedly hunted by the Wraith for reasons unknown, possible for sport or training, or in hopes that they will lead the Wraith to fresh prey. This tracking device was removed from the back of Ronon Dex by Dr. Beckett in second season episode Runner, marking Ronon's transition from victim of the Wraith to free man and Atlantis Expedition team member.  Similar devices were seen again in a few further episodes, including Spoils of War from the fourth season.
