Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi, Production used Matte painting study
original production material
This is a concept and line up illustration done for a matte painting shot in 'Return of the Jedi.' This shot is composed of a filmed location plate shot, with no VFX, with Han Solo, Princess Leia, an Ewok and Chewbacca overlooking the landing platform in the forest.
The matte artist took a photographic print of the plate with the actors, then using a cel overlay, did a small concept illustration to confirm the content and layout of the matte painting prior to creation. There is a set of alignment marks to show how the painting and the filmed shot will merge. The cel is sandwiched over the background photograph with areas outside the shot action covered with black tape.
So is a study, a draft, matte painting study not the final on screen, as those are much bigger, and locked under 100 keys in Lucasfilms archives.
