In fifth season episode Apocalypse Rising, Sisko and his team infiltrate the Klingon military headquarters on Ty'Gokor,  investigating the possibility that Chancellor Gowron, leader of the High Council, has been replaced by a Changeling. To test the theory, they plan to detonate four of these devices simultaneously in close proximity to the Chancellor; if he is indeed one of the Founders, the polaron burst will make it impossible for him to maintain a humanoid shape, exposing the deception.
