Star Wars: A New Hope, Original hand drawn Johnston Storyboard. Millenium cockpit.

original production artwork

This original storyboard, is the shot of the millennium falcon cockpit back view approaching the death star. Has two layers of paper, one is mimeographed (from the master drawing) showing the cockpit and characters, and the windows of the cockpit are cut out so that the translucent medium in pen & marker can show through. The original pen & marker drawing is the starred background, with death star and tie fighter. So this special storyboard is a construction of two-layer, mixed-medium piece. The two layers are sealed to each other in the corners. The top layer has a cut out head and cut outs for the cockpit window frame, through which shows outer space. This technique was used as the cockpit drawing was going to be used for more shots, so only have to change or make a new drawing, only for the space, the background. So from this storyboard, copies for the crew were made.
