In a flashback sequence near the end of series premier two-parter Sanctuary For All, we see how John Druitt, Helen Magnus' former scientific partner, fiancee, and patient, was actually responsible for the Jack the Ripper murders that plagued late Victorian era London.  In the flashback, John/Jack is just about to dispatch another lady of the evening when Helen attempts to intervene (unsuccessfully).
