The pop culture notion of alien abduction was first deliberately explored in the Trek universe in TNG sixth season episode Schisms, in which a group of unnamed subspace-dwelling aliens gain access to the Enterprise and start abducting crewmembers for experiments, returning them hours later with only vague disquieting memories left of what had happened. During a shared computer-generated holodeck reconstruction of the alien environment by the Enterprise crew's abductees, Worf's first description of the device that menaced him yields this scissors-like instrument, with subsequent more accurate versions looking increasingly threatening.
