As important as manning a massive vessel like the Avalon, even the crew needs to sleep for 90 years to make sure they can land the thing. Gus Mancuso woke up early, just like Jim and Aurora, but he was able to figure out just why it happened. Gus managed to point Jim and Aurora in the right direction before his passing, making him just as much of a hero as Jim. Gus wears these badges with his uniform.
