Star Trek The Original Series, Galileo Seven
original movie prop
Star Trek, Galileo 1701/7 Set Prop, 1966 Hull fragment recovered from the 2002-2003 Restoration. Hull Section of the “Star Trek Galileo Seven”, from the ¾ scale (22’-0” long nominal) screen used set prop. Included is a photo of the Galileo being stored outdoors, and under construction at AMT in 1966, both for reference only.
In the 1980’s the Galileo Prop was donated by the studio to a School For The Blind. It was stored outdoors near Dayton Ohio and by the time it was acquired for restoration, in June 2013, all the wood exterior had rotted. Furthermore the metal framing had deteriorated badly including metal-cracking from the intrusion of water that had frozen inside.
During restoration all of the wood had to be replaced. Some of the discarded wood exterior became prized by collectors as a historic artifact.
Sample can be authenticated by spectrographic analysis of the paint and panel. I own two of these fragments. This depicted Screen Used Artifact measures a nominal: 1.33” high x 0.74” wide x 0.37 thick.
GENERAL: Paint layers, -⅛” fiberglass laminations, -¼” masonite Core, -All Visible. There are approximately 20 of these fragments in collections worldwide. Ask around, you may know someone who owns a fragment or knows me.
TOS Set Craftsman: Exterior and Interior; AMT Phoenix, AZ, 09-12-1966 Galileo 1701/7 Design: Exterior by Gene Winfield of AMT, Interior 1/1 scale design by Matt Jefferies. Ironically life imitated Star Trek art; The first space shuttle was named Enterprise. Leonard Nimoy, of "Star Trek" fame, told the story “on CBS” of how President Gerald Ford agreed to change the name of NASA's space shuttle Constitution to Enterprise.
