Ghostbusters, Egon Spengler Radiacmeter

replica movie prop

Ray, this looks extraordinarily bad...

After the Ghostbusters seem to emerge victorious during thier climactic confrontation with Gozer, Egon takes a reading with a simple pocket meter only to find that it's not quite over yet.

The found item used for this scene was a Radiacmeter IM-179, a portable gamma radiation meter placed in military air crew survival kits during the Cold War.  The Radiacmeter had simple functions (TEST and READ buttons; notice that Egon is holding the TEST button onscreen), and convenient information on how quickly you should expect to die from radiation exposure. Several companies produced slightly different versions of the Radiacmeter IM-179 under contract with the military; this one is the same make and model as the meter used onscreen, from Jordan Electronics of Alhambra, California.
