The journal was written by Doctor Catherine Halsey over a period of 42 years, between August 2510 and August 2552. In the Halo universe, the journal was classified under Double-Blind Protocal Aurora-7 and kept from the declassification process by Special Executive Order (SEO) 0-99-447S.
