To become a witch, a pure sacrifice must be made. For Mary, her sacrifice sealed her contract with the Devil as well as freed her from public shame. That sacrifice came in the form of her unborn son conceived with John Alden. To Mary's surprise, the sacrifice wasn't one of blood, but of vessel, and the boy remained alive to be used for the Devil's purposes. Enraptured in love, Mary and John fought to keep him, despite the evil to come, and named him after his father. This is little John's lightweight midnight black dragon-scale patterned doublet with tie-on sleeves.
