Star Trek: The Next Generation, Comm Badge 'Working' Prototype - Production Made
original movie prop
This was the first of two rejected, though production-made, working commbadges for the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 'Brothers'.
The was made to the specs that were provided and completely finished and ready for screen-use.
Once it arrived on set the powers-that-be decided that (even though they asked for it that way) they did not want the commbadge to flip up to open. The prop was sent back for revision. They asked that the new one be hinged at the wearer's left instead of the top.
This was made to be functional in that it was built with electronics that activate when a small switch is release as the commbadge is opened.
Unfortunately the comm badge was made with excellent electronics and batteries, and the prop was to be used for only one episode, so the batteries are sealed in the prop since the battery in each would never have to be replaced.
This does not currently light and it would have to be partially destroyed to remedy that.
A screen-cap is included here from the episode to show what the final prop looked like.
instead of the top.
