Face Off, Clapperboard

original production material

A clapperboard used in the production of the John Woo action film Face/Off. With a ticking time bomb somewhere in Los Angeles, FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) undergoes dramatic cosmetic surgery, taking the face of captured terrorist Castor Troy (Nicholas Cage) so that he can infiltrate his terrorist cell and find the bomb’s location. But when Troy escapes and has Archer’s face grafted onto his own bare skin, a deadly game of cat and mouse begins. One of the most iconic and memorable aspects of the movie making industry has to be the clapperboard. For decades this has been a vital piece of equipment that enables not just sound and image to be synchronised, but to also advise the viewer of the raw footage the exact details of the upcoming shot. The simple monochromatic device has become a symbolic image synonymous with films, and is still used to this day. Well used on the production of the film, this medium-size clapperboard has the title “Face Off” and the production company “Paramount Pictures” engraved along the top with the name of second unit director Billy Burton engraved beneath. Second unit camera operator Leo Napolitano has his name applied with a label. Spaces in the boxes at the top of the clapperboard slate are present to write in marker the roll, scene and take. Some labels remain from its time in use, with the roll marked as "XQ" and the cam marked as Q Cam. The date of its last use is marked as 03/18/1997at the bottom of the board. The clapper stick remains in a loose condition, allowing for a sharp snap when closed.
