Rome, Centurion Montefortino-Type Helmet
replica movie prop
The Roman army used the Montefortino-type helmet the longest, from the beginning of the Punic Wars in the 3rd century until the era of Caesar Augustus, it was part of a legionary's standard equipment. This helmet is hand hammered from 18 gauge brass and has a typical, bowl-shaped scull with a slightly sloping neck guard. The cheek pieces, which are designed to protect a large part of the face, are riveted to hinges at the temples. The transverse crest ("crista transversalis") with red horsehair is attached to the top of the fully leather lined bowl which would have been worn by an officer with the rank of Centurion. Licensed reproduction from the HBO Series "Rome".
