The Illusionist, Butterfly Puzzle Locket
replica movie prop
In 19th century Austria, budding young magician Eisenheim loves a girl far above his station. Just before they are separated, he makes her a pendant that seemingly impossibly transforms into a heart shaped locket containing his picture; she keeps it with her until his return years later.
In fact, as shown in the film, the locket trick was indeed impossible; several different lockets were used in the scene to achieve the effect. However, a functional prop that comes very close to recreating the illusion presented on screen can be made.
This fine replica is made of lacquered walnut with white pine butterfly inlays. Of screen accurate size, it is far thinner than most Illusionist locket replicas available, measuring only 1/4" or 6.35 mm thick. Despite it's small profile, the pendant twist and locket cover turn both move unimpeded through 360 degrees and lock into position with a satisfying snap.
