Porridge, BBC Porridge series 1974 Ronnie Barker...Richard Beckinsale...Alun Armstrong...Micheal Redfern Pri
original movie costume
A rare grey prisoner jacket used on the set in the famous TV series Porridge.
H.M Prison Slade.
Made by M Berman Ltd.
I have never seen another.
I understand that alot of the BBC items from the 70's were thrown into a skip....so would be very interested if anyone else has any other items relating to this TV series.
Provenance Angels the Costumiers.
Starring Ronnie Barker..(Norman Stanley Fletcher)
Richard Beckinsale..(Lennie Godber)
Brian Wilde..(Mr Barrowclough)
Fulton Mackay..(Mr Mackay)
Sam Kelly..(Bunny Warren)
Unfortunately name has gone but currently trying to screen match.
After many hours of viewing Porridge i believe i am a big step closer to screen matching this jacket.
I noticed on most of the jackets that the top line of stitching that holds the inner lining to the jacket and runs across the breast is about 1 inch above the pocket where as only a few as mine the stitching runs along the same line as the top of the pocket.
The next clue was that my jacket has 5 buttons and as hard as i looked all the jackets including main actors and background actors from the first series to the last all seemed to have 4 buttons .
For some reason the costume dept removed the bottom button.
There was one jacket however that had all 5 buttons and appeared first in the Christmas special THE DESPERATE HOURS 1976 and was worn by Micheal Redfern as TULIP..the same jacket also appeared in 1977 A TEST OF CHARACTER and was worn by Alun Armstrong as Spraggon.
On both of the jackets the stitching runs along the top of the pocket as mine.
