A pair of golden cherubim facing one another crown the Ark's lid, forming the kapporet or 'mercy seat' meant only for the Lord, as described in the Book of Exodus. Belloq and the Nazis remove the kapporet and open the Ark, hoping to uncover the powers hidden within, only to lose their lives and mortal souls for the transgression.
